"Explain how representations in music videos are chosen to promote the artist(s). Refer to one of the music videos you have studied to support your answer"

We are In a society where American schools have, typically, a high amount of bullying, the music video Titanium is trying to represent that everyone is different. By showing that the boy has a supernatural ability suggests that he is different, representing the children in schools and how everyone is different.  A cultural reference is the use of guns in america. American people view this as a normal culture growing up with guns for defence, however the social reference of school shootings is suggested in this video as the scene is in a school and there looks like there was a lot of chaos. in the media it is suggested to us that the shootings in schools are carried out by the pupils, therefore the little boy (who the teacher appears to be afraid of) is sitting on his own as if he was apart/ the cause of the chaos. Therefore, the representation of america, american schools shootings and bulling promotes the message that the artist may have a personal experience with one of these events.  This tells us that the artist (David Guetta) supports individuality. Even though we may not hear or see him we still know that these lyrics and the video are a representation of him and his personal views. Therefore, the little boy who appears to have been bullied and looks singled out could be representing him when he was a child, but now he is showing through his lyrics "I'm bullet proof", that he believes that he is strong, but in terms of his views on bullying it shows that he is telling people to stand up to anti bullying.
In the long shot tracking back of the young boy we see the mise-en-scene looks like a broken surroundings and him sitting alone in the middle of a door way. His performance of him sitting in the middle of a door way suggests that he may have caused the damage, one can argue to represent his broken emotions. Also, it can suggest he is isolated, linking to the ideology of bulling happens in schools, as typically when you are being bullied you isolate yourself and feel alone. Furthermore, the colour palette in the scene is quite grey and dull, suggesting negative emotions in the scene. we typically associate dull colours with sadness and gloom, liking to the isolation of the boy in the scene. With all the negative connotations to bullying it may represent the emotions the artist has felt in a time of his life or how he is feeling. This artist (David Guetta) is represented  through his music, which display a story we assume to be an aspect of his life and a social issue in society. As a well known figure in our society he has a high influence on young people today to spread the awareness of bullying, but also that bullying is able to get through.

Furthermore, in the part where we see the boy throw his teddy bear away its shows the transition of him as a child to him a teenager. it shows he is capable and doesn't want to be perceived as a little vulnerable boy. However, it can also be seen as him throwing away his childhood because bulling can destroy a Childs childhood, so due to his differences he is bullied and the teddy is a symbol of his childhood which he wants to get rid of. also, the bedroom is cold and dull, suggesting no one is ever home and that he is alone, therefore he won't miss home now he has to grow up and run from who is chasing him.

K: The concept of representation and stereotype in the media.
U: How and why media texts encourage or challenge representations and stereotypes.
BAT: Discuss the influence of representation, both negative and positive.
CO: Use media terminology throughout your verbal and written communication.

For many of us, the media are the key source of our understanding of the world.
For example, what is it like to live in Australia?  If you have not been there, how do you know this?
Many people believe that the media are a powerful means of shaping our attitudes and beliefs – what does this mean??

REPRESENTATION is the process the media presents the "real" world to us.

STEREOTYPES is the portrayal of people or places through using/adapting obvious/universally accepted characteristics.

Some people argue that the media follows stereotypes to make audiences feel safe as they know what to expect.
Some other people argue that the media controls the way you think.
Some other people argue that some representations are unfair and not true.

These people are called THEORISTS.
