Analysing the Daily Mail and The Guardian

Learning Objectives:

K: Key elements that make up print newspapers and their online counterparts.
U: How and why these elements differ from one medium to another.
BAT: Create your own analysis of these using media terminology throughout.
CO: Use media terminology in your verbal and written communication.
LP: Recall, wider reading.
Video number 1: Start with a quick overview of the newspapers front pages, highlighting key elements and difference in stories - same as the activity last lesson, choose two front covers of the same day.

Video number 2: Visit The Mail Online and the Guardian websites and do a similar analysis of their home pages in terms of highlighting elements and type of content.

Key question:
Go online and log onto the newspaper's associated social and participatory media feeds and discuss how these link to the themes or issues represented in the front covers chosen. What do you think the effects are of newspapers becoming more digital and less print? In your opinion how do they differ when it comes to telling us the news?
The daily mail online provides a brief outline of the story and the headlines arn't as detailed in comparison to what we see in newspapers. In the text at the bottom off this first article is gives a line from the article that may be in the newspaper itself aswell as online. However, online the newspaper want to appeal to the younger audience (e.g. teenagers) who are typically the people most commonly using social media and who are mostly likely to scroll app on these posts. Also, they advertise the post at the top which would grab the fans of a show, this is an eye grabbing story that appeals to the fans but also to people who have heard of the show. Also, there isn't a main story unlike in the newspapers we see one main story that doesn't change until the next days issue is release, but online we see loads of stories that appear and update as the day goes on. Online is more of a daily activity in comparison to the issues sold in stores because eventually what we see in store we will finish reading but online stories are updated daily so each time we refresh our phones we see a new story or an updated story to read. Overall, we see a major change as everything becomes more digital than reading it on paper because means money is saved on printing within companies, however it shows technology has developed.

Pratical Assessment HT2

Key concepts:
  • Denotation/connotation.
  • Camera shot, angle and movement.
  • Genre: codes and conventions.
  • Representation: stereotyping.
  • Contexts.
  • Intertextuality.

Contexts:
  • The Royal Wedding next year (will cost £10million - Windsor [The Royal Family] said they would pay for it).
  • The Grenfell Tower disaster (there's still people who haven't been relocated properly)
I am going to be dressing the issue that the Royal family i willing to spend £10 million on a royal wedding, in oppose to support and rehoming for sufferers of the greenfield tower disaster. Over the year of 2017 a lot of attacks and national disasters have occurred where people have lost homes and family members, however the royal family have been 'invisible' during these disasters and not made any contributions to the help and warfare of people who have suffered in there country. Therefore, its targeted the issue of is money being spent correctly by the monarchy? As it is hard to agree with spending an extreme amount on a wedding instead of providing the help needed to put peoples lives on track, which the money provided from the council and taxes cannot provide the needed support alone.

The target audience of my final drafted magazine is c1 and below, however it touches upon the A and B audiences as they are the people with money and considered to have intelligence so are people who may be guilt tripped into donating money towards the cause of the victims. Although, the main target audience is for C1 and below this is because in our final draft we included pictures of the victims, so we wanted to target it towards people of the same social status and opinions as the greenfield tower, because it may make those people consider the argument on a personal view point and make them think about the little the royal family has done for them. Also, the people in the C1 and below category are considered less intelligent and easier to persuade, therefore they are more likely to believe the same view of the magazine.

In terms of intertextuality, on our second draft we used a pound coin as the sun surrendered by a childrens drawing of a sun. this links to the c1 and below audiences and the drawing done by a kid is considered less intelligent and not drawn well. however the context behind that idea was to target the focus of the British money represented with the pound with the queens face on it to show the influence of the royal family. the bright yellow colour of the sun makes it appear like the royal family is happy because we associate the sun with a nice day, however its over looking the tower, which clearly wasn't a good day. However in our final draft we got rid of the sun and replaced  the background of the sky with pictures of the Grenfell tower victims. Therefore, it shows that whilst the royal family are getting married (on the ground) the victims are no longer here. this is done to make the lower classes feel sympathy of the victims and to influence there views on the royal family.

Furthermore, in relation to the representation of the royal family and the event of the Grenfell tower incident, i choose to have a picture looking up on the building to show once it stood strong, however the representation of Harry and Megan is that they are standing below the victims provides two messages that the are below the victims (they have no influence to the victims), also that they are 'in a rich mans world' representing there materialistic persona, how money if valued to them on the materialistic facts of life, (e.g. the wedding) in oppose to the value of there people (the victims ) and providing the support they need.

ISSUES/EVENTS

This poster of beauty and the beast mentions the 'literacy campaign', and bringing in more libraries. this relates to the film as Belle is an idol for the younger audiences and represents her love for books, this is supposed to encourage children into reading. Also, by using a disney fairytale as the  representation gives the impression that the literacy campaign and takes you to a fairytale. At the time this a campaign called 'the national literacy trust' had come out, who are a charity working with schools and communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills to succeed in life. Therefore, this poster is targeting, not just the wonders of reading and a child's dreams and imagination, but the awareness for a campaign supporting the children.

20/11/2017 - Sample Exam Question for Component 1 - Music videos.

Sample Exam Question for Component 1 - Music videos.

Learning Objectives:

K: The kind of question that the exam is likely to have.
U: The kind of content required to answer this question successfully.
BAT: Analyse set products effectively.

-------------------

"Explain how representations in music videos are chosen to promote the artist(s). Refer to one of the music videos you have studied to support your answer"

We are In a society where American schools have, typically, a high amount of bullying, the music video Titanium is trying to represent that everyone is different. By showing that the boy has a supernatural ability suggests that he is different, representing the children in schools and how everyone is different.  A cultural reference is the use of guns in america. American people view this as a normal culture growing up with guns for defence, however the social reference of school shootings is suggested in this video as the scene is in a school and there looks like there was a lot of chaos. in the media it is suggested to us that the shootings in schools are carried out by the pupils, therefore the little boy (who the teacher appears to be afraid of) is sitting on his own as if he was apart/ the cause of the chaos. Therefore, the representation of america, american schools shootings and bulling promotes the message that the artist may have a personal experience with one of these events.  This tells us that the artist (David Guetta) supports individuality. Even though we may not hear or see him we still know that these lyrics and the video are a representation of him and his personal views. Therefore, the little boy who appears to have been bullied and looks singled out could be representing him when he was a child, but now he is showing through his lyrics "I'm bullet proof", that he believes that he is strong, but in terms of his views on bullying it shows that he is telling people to stand up to anti bullying.
In the long shot tracking back of the young boy we see the mise-en-scene looks like a broken surroundings and him sitting alone in the middle of a door way. His performance of him sitting in the middle of a door way suggests that he may have caused the damage, one can argue to represent his broken emotions. Also, it can suggest he is isolated, linking to the ideology of bulling happens in schools, as typically when you are being bullied you isolate yourself and feel alone. Furthermore, the colour palette in the scene is quite grey and dull, suggesting negative emotions in the scene. we typically associate dull colours with sadness and gloom, liking to the isolation of the boy in the scene. With all the negative connotations to bullying it may represent the emotions the artist has felt in a time of his life or how he is feeling. This artist (David Guetta) is represented  through his music, which display a story we assume to be an aspect of his life and a social issue in society. As a well known figure in our society he has a high influence on young people today to spread the awareness of bullying, but also that bullying is able to get through.

Furthermore, in the part where we see the boy throw his teddy bear away its shows the transition of him as a child to him a teenager. it shows he is capable and doesn't want to be perceived as a little vulnerable boy. However, it can also be seen as him throwing away his childhood because bulling can destroy a Childs childhood, so due to his differences he is bullied and the teddy is a symbol of his childhood which he wants to get rid of. also, the bedroom is cold and dull, suggesting no one is ever home and that he is alone, therefore he won't miss home now he has to grow up and run from who is chasing him.
