"Explain how representations in music videos are chosen to promote the artist(s). Refer to one of the music videos you have studied to support your answer"

We are In a society where American schools have, typically, a high amount of bullying, the music video Titanium is trying to represent that everyone is different. By showing that the boy has a supernatural ability suggests that he is different, representing the children in schools and how everyone is different.  A cultural reference is the use of guns in america. American people view this as a normal culture growing up with guns for defence, however the social reference of school shootings is suggested in this video as the scene is in a school and there looks like there was a lot of chaos. in the media it is suggested to us that the shootings in schools are carried out by the pupils, therefore the little boy (who the teacher appears to be afraid of) is sitting on his own as if he was apart/ the cause of the chaos. Therefore, the representation of america, american schools shootings and bulling promotes the message that the artist may have a personal experience with one of these events.  This tells us that the artist (David Guetta) supports individuality. Even though we may not hear or see him we still know that these lyrics and the video are a representation of him and his personal views. Therefore, the little boy who appears to have been bullied and looks singled out could be representing him when he was a child, but now he is showing through his lyrics "I'm bullet proof", that he believes that he is strong, but in terms of his views on bullying it shows that he is telling people to stand up to anti bullying.
In the long shot tracking back of the young boy we see the mise-en-scene looks like a broken surroundings and him sitting alone in the middle of a door way. His performance of him sitting in the middle of a door way suggests that he may have caused the damage, one can argue to represent his broken emotions. Also, it can suggest he is isolated, linking to the ideology of bulling happens in schools, as typically when you are being bullied you isolate yourself and feel alone. Furthermore, the colour palette in the scene is quite grey and dull, suggesting negative emotions in the scene. we typically associate dull colours with sadness and gloom, liking to the isolation of the boy in the scene. With all the negative connotations to bullying it may represent the emotions the artist has felt in a time of his life or how he is feeling. This artist (David Guetta) is represented  through his music, which display a story we assume to be an aspect of his life and a social issue in society. As a well known figure in our society he has a high influence on young people today to spread the awareness of bullying, but also that bullying is able to get through.

Furthermore, in the part where we see the boy throw his teddy bear away its shows the transition of him as a child to him a teenager. it shows he is capable and doesn't want to be perceived as a little vulnerable boy. However, it can also be seen as him throwing away his childhood because bulling can destroy a Childs childhood, so due to his differences he is bullied and the teddy is a symbol of his childhood which he wants to get rid of. also, the bedroom is cold and dull, suggesting no one is ever home and that he is alone, therefore he won't miss home now he has to grow up and run from who is chasing him.

K: The concept of representation and stereotype in the media.
U: How and why media texts encourage or challenge representations and stereotypes.
BAT: Discuss the influence of representation, both negative and positive.
CO: Use media terminology throughout your verbal and written communication.

For many of us, the media are the key source of our understanding of the world.
For example, what is it like to live in Australia?  If you have not been there, how do you know this?
Many people believe that the media are a powerful means of shaping our attitudes and beliefs – what does this mean??

REPRESENTATION is the process the media presents the "real" world to us.

STEREOTYPES is the portrayal of people or places through using/adapting obvious/universally accepted characteristics.

Some people argue that the media follows stereotypes to make audiences feel safe as they know what to expect.
Some other people argue that the media controls the way you think.
Some other people argue that some representations are unfair and not true.

These people are called THEORISTS.

Assessment

This is an advertisement for gardening TV show. We as a group rebranded it to appeal to all audiences, encouraging the young and old generations to get involved in Gardening. Before the advertisement only appealed to the older generation, but we included a picture of a young group of teenagers to show that gardening is for everyone. We also used bright colours on the advert to keep it eye-catching, as younger people are encouraged by bright colours because bright colours appear my exciting and fun, where as dull colours look bland and mature, therefore not appealing to the younger generations. The children smiling in the picture makes them look happy to be gardening, but it also implies that its something you can grow up enjoying to an older mature age, it implies that this is there transformation. the colours green and blue in the picture are used to represent the world connoting that everyone can be involved in gardening. the pictures used are taken face on in a midshot as we can see there whole body and surrounding.

feedback

why are your younger people smaller than your bigger ones?

this is too show that they are young are need to grow and thta one day they will be brought into the world of gardening like the people above them. its like they are looking up to the people above and older than them to shwoing that kids can look up to them.

Task 1: Marketing and advertising

Old Spice poster:

In this marketing advert poster we see a mid shot/ long shot for 'old spice' an aftershave which was rebranded in 2010 to advertise an aftershave that was once targeted at older men, but is now targeted towards younger men and their girlfriends. it  can be argued that one of the effects of the advert is that it makes men feel belittled in comparison to the man in the advert and encourages women to buy their boyfriends the aftershave because it makes them more like men and shows all the advantages of being a powerful man.
By using a mid shot/ long shot it shows the beautiful surroundings, which represent paradise and the dream place to be, therefore when people are looking at the advert it represents the greatness of the brand as we believe as the consumers that buying this aftershave is going to make everything great and our surroundings are going to be different, but in reality our lives stay the same.
The mans costume in the poster consists of white trousers and a top tied around his neck, whilst he is sitting on a horse in a bright surrounding. The white trousers on a white horse in a bright surrounding suggest his purity and angelic persona. therefore, it makes the audience believe that this aftershave makes you perfect as we represent white with the good and amazing aspects in life. Also, the bright lights make him stand out and give him a bright outline, as the light in contrasting him making him standout and be the centre of attention.
Furthermore, the attractive man is used in order to catch the eye of women, in order to make them think ' i want my boyfriend to be like him' encouraging them to buy there boyfriends it.The poster has all the romantic conventions, although instead of looking at the audience directly in a romantic stare, his facial expressions are suggesting the question of why haven't you got this aftershave. Therefore, as a consumer we feel as if we need to get the aftershave for our boyfriends in order to have the perfect guy and the perfect relationship in the perfect scene.
This advert can be aimed at both male and females because it catches the eyes of

Task 3
Made with Padlet

 Plenary

Why do you think it is important for film makers to use camera movements in their movies?

I think its important for film makers to use camera movements to enhance and display emotions of the character or the events within a scene.

Can you link Camera movements to specific genres? Give two examples.

A stedicam can be used in horror films when a character is walking into danger or about to be approached by a scary character so we can see what they are approaching as if we are there with the character ourselves.

A flipshot can be used in an action adventure film, such as the hunger games, to show the dramatic events of the running in and out of danger. It also shows them moving from different distances and as they pass.
